To keep you involved! And learning!  

Guidelines

We will be engaged in a lot of discussion, idea sharing, demonstrating, and critiquing during this course. This will begin the first day of the course when we discuss the value of research in education and carry through until our final presentations.

There will be many opportunities for participation: one-on-one discussions, in-class sessions, contributions to course resources, and providing assistance to colleagues (feedback on ideas, sharing resources for individual projects, etc.). Participation is not only an important part of the course; it is required for the successful implementation of the course. We need and want to hear your thoughts and ideas! Come prepared to engage in stimulating conversation and participate in interesting activities in a "hands-on, minds-on" environment.

Your participation will be assessed in several ways. One way will be through your contributions to class discussions, both in-class and online. You will also demonstrate participation and idea sharing with the sharing of resources and ideas with your colleagues on their own projects. Another way will be in way of contributions to our body of knowledge via Web-based resources and print resources related to research in educational settings.

Assessment Rubric (This task is worth 10 points)

  • Excellent (9 - 10 points)

  • Online, the learner consistently posted insightful comments and questions that prompted additional on-topic discussion / In-class, the learner demonstrated active engagement by asking questions and making insightful comments.
  • The learner consistently helped clarify or synthesize other group members' ideas online and in-class. 
  • If disagreeing with another learner's ideas, the learner stated disagreements or objections clearly, yet politely.     

    Good (7 - 8 points)

  • The learner was sometimes lacking in one or two of the items listed for "Excellent" level participation. 
  • The learner sometimes had to be prompted or coaxed to participate. 
  • The learner usually, but not always, expressed herself or himself clearly.     

    Below Expectations (5  - 6 points)

  • The learner was often lacking in two or three of the items listed for "Excellent" level participation. 
  • The learner often had to be prompted or coaxed to participate. 
  • The learner rarely expressed herself or himself clearly.     

    Failure (0 - 4 points)

  • The learner was often lacking in all of the items listed for "Excellent" level participation. 
  • The learner was extremely reluctant to participate, even when prompted. 
  • The learner was rude or abusive to other learners or instructors. .
