Up to date with all info available in OASIS as of 10-9-09. After that, sporadic updates will be made as info becomes available.

Course Rotations | Cohort 8 | Cohort 9 | Ed.S. Certified
I don't know which cohort I'm in!

This is not a substitute for OASIS! Check online to be sure of your details.

If you find mistakes, changes, or other info that might help SLM students (including courses from other universities) - email MAF (mfitzger at uga dot edu); I will add details as they seem necessary.
Graduate School Policy on Continuous Enrollment

General Information - Read every semester!
Most important:  Don't wait until the last minute.
Touch base with your advisor at least once per semester.  Also, keep abreast of Grad School Deadlines. Consult the Graduate School Continuous Enrollment rules before you take a semester "off."

If you're following the Cohort Plan, you will probably hear all you need to know in Saturday class. Once you know what you're going to take, email your advisor this information:

With these few information items, the advisor can usually check your status and clear you for registration. He/she will let you know if more discussion is necessary.

Remember: Don't wait until the last minute.  You must be cleared by your advisor, and professors often disappear to points unknown for days at a time!  If you take care of registration well in advance, you will minimize your worries.

Children's lit, late-breaking news: (4-6-09)

Some children's lit offerings may be listed in OASIS under the prefix LLED.

Summer 09:

LLED 43-652 SURVEY OF CHILD

LLED 5314/7314  Informational Children's Literature (P-8)  - Call #'s 33-660 or 73-662
1-3:15pm daily - first session - 114 Aderhold  - DeGroff
MAF's note: The double course number indicates that this is a mixed undergrad-grad class - fine for you to take.  Make sure your registration indicated LLED 7314 - probably 73-662.

Explanation, from Dept Chair Dr. Faust:
The Department of Language and Literacy Education (programs in English
education, reading education, foreign language education, TESOL, and
children's literature) will begin using a new LLED prefix for all its
courses beginning spring semester 2010. In the interim (summer 09 and fall
09) some courses will be offered with an LLED prefix while others will be
offered using the "old" ELAN and READ prefixes. If students or advisors are
unable to find a course they are looking for with one of the "old" prefixes
they should check to see if the course is listed using the LLED prefix.

And from Dr. DeGroff:
The Survey of Children's Lit online will be offered this summer as
LLED 6310 ... I'd appreciate it if you'd share this info with your
students.  I look forward to having those Library Media Specialist in
class again ...
And, if you will, please alert students to a mandatory face-to-face
meeting on Wednesday, 6/3, 4:30-7:30 in room 114/115 Aderhold.

LLED 7045E: see Children's Lit section below *new*
Other universities: see below

Summer 2009

Most students prefer to register for Summer and Fall simultaneously, a practice encouraged by UGA. (Luckily, you do not have to pay all fees at once in advance; note the payment deadlines as you register.)  Therefore, consider Summer and Fall courses together - Fall information is provided below.

Do not skip the general information above!

Schedules can be found on the Academic Calendar.
Refer to the Bulletin for more general information about course offerings, rules, procedures, etc.
This information is provided for your convenience; OASIS is the final authority in case of changes.

OASIS Catalog
(browse the EDIT section for Athens and distance courses; browse the Gwinnett section at the end for most of our SLM courses.)

EDIT 6380 - Cataloging - Jones - format and dates TBA - Extended - Email Dr. Jones for info - 13-253

Take whatever is left for you to take.  Consult with your advisor.

Those Finishing Internships this Summer:

EDIT 7460E - Internship in School Library Media - Fitzgerald - no formal meetings over the summer - Extended -40-640
Make absolutely certain the call number matches, and that you indicate 3 hours.

Off Pattern Possibilities
(consult your advisor; this info is for folks who are behind or ahead of their cohort plan):

EDIT 6170E -  Instructional Design - Rieber - 50-615 - ?? Session -  online; 10:30-12:45 daily.   May require trips to Athens for orientation or exams.   (Note: this is not the SLM version of this required class, but it will certainly work!)

Technology, preferred:
EDIT 6000 - Special Problems - known as Tech in the Modern Media Center [equivalent to EDIT 6350] - make sure to indicate 3 hours - 50-517, Session II - 8a-5p, July 13-17, Gwinnett.  This course satisfies the PSC technology requirement.  In lieu of textbooks, a $125 supply fee is required; also, you will need to fill out some information needed by the ETC - forthcoming.  MAF has sample syllabus; ask for a peek on a class day.

Children's Literature:
See "late-breaking" news about CL at top of page.  I haven't had time to login to OASIS to review these - you're on your own!

ELAN 6410 - Adolescent Literature - Marshall -  00-674 - 1st session - mostly online. Very popular w/ SLM; register as early as possible.

ELAN 7016 - Folk Literature - DeGroff - 10-675 - 1st Session - Aderhold 114 - daily 1p-3:15p

LLED 7045E - Thru - listed under "day" - 83-654 - Special Topics: Histrocial Fiction/Non-fiction - DeGroff

ELAN 7318 - Culturally Diverse Children's Lit - Taxel - 60-672 - Aderhold 114 - 1st session - daily 10:30-12:45

Other universities: if you can't get CL at UGA, it's possible to get it elsewhere and transfer it in. (Caveats: you will have to register as a transient student at that university; once complete, you may have to complete transfer paperwork for UGA; any courses taken must be graduate level; you must make a grade of B or better; there's a 6-hour limit for transfers applying to your whole degree; you must be registered for something at UGA during your graduation semester.)  Our SLM community researchers report the following opportunities.  Obviously, you will have to do a good bit of research to fill out the details for any of these.

Other Technology Alternatives:
Note that only EDIT 6000 and EDIT 6150 meet the PSC technology requirement.

EDIT 6190 - Design & Development Tools - 4hours - 90-617 - 1-4:30p daily Aderhold 601 - Orey, 1st session

Electives of interest to SLM folks:
READ 8100, Inquiry-Based Literacy (Fall 06, Mondays, 4:40 -7:40) will primarily focus this year on the work of Paulo Freire, Mikhail Bakhtin, bell hooks, & Louise Rosenblatt. In examining the concepts of dialogue and transaction as viewed by these theorists, class members will develop understandings and theories regarding inquiry pedagogy and critical inquiry pedagogy. They will then be able to apply those understandings and theories to literacy classrooms. Readings could include Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Pedagogy of the Heart, Teaching to Transgress, Teaching Community, Discourse in the Novel, Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics, Literature as Exploration,  and  The Reader, the Text, the Poem.  Instructor: Dr. Bob Fecho, bfecho@uga.edu.  MAF's comments: Dr. Fecho has a reputation as an excellent teacher. This course might be interesting for Ed.S. students who need electives, or for any SLM student needing a challenging elective. Note the traditional campus format.  Comment from an alum: "This is definitely a doctoral level class" -- i.e., expect a significant challenge.

ESOL Endorsement

As of 11-10-05, anyone with a Clear Renewable certificate in any area (T, S, or L) may add the ESOL endorsement.  In other words, a Teaching field is not a necessary precursor. Some students may want to consider pursuing the ESOL endorsement, which consists of ELAN 7730, ELAN 7040, ELAN 7630.  ELAN 7630 is a particulary relevant SLM elective, because it deals with material design and teaching methods to use with non-native English speakers.  For more information about about the ESOL program, work with the Department of Language and Literacy Education.

Reading Endorsement

It is now possible to add a Reading Endorsement to any teaching certificate in Georgia. All courses for the Reading Endorsement must have been completed after July 1, 2000 when the endorsement went into effect! The Department of Language and Literacy Education has been approved by the state Professional Standards Commission to offer the Endorsement to any student completing the following 3 courses:

READ 6010 Foundations of Reading Instruction (online or on campus)
READ 6020 Children With Reading Problems (online or on campus)

and ONE of the following courses depending upon whether the Endorsement is sought respectively at the elementary, middle, or secondary school level:

READ 6420 Literacy Development and Instruction in Early Childhood (online or on campus)
READ 6070 Middle School Reading (online or on campus)
READ 6030 Teaching Reading in the Secondary School

For more information on the Reading Education program, contact the Department of Language and Literacy Education.

Continuous Enrollment Policy

The Graduate School has decreed a new policy that requires students to enroll in at least one course each semester, with the exception of summers.  There are procedures for waiving this requirement on a case-by-case basis, and red tape is required to gain approval.  Please research the policy on the Graduate School web site and through your advisor if this situation applies to you.  We will be learning about it as we go along.  It takes effect in Fall of 2007 for students enrolled now (Spring of 2006), and in Fall of 2006 for students beginning from Summer 2006 on.  If you have any doubt or concern that you might fall under this rule, please do some research and talk to your advisor.
