Checklist of Steps

This Checklist is based on the Syllabus, but is not a substitute for it. Read it thoroughly before beginning this list.

Tasks that may save you time later, but optional at this stage:
  • File your CBC if you know it will be required. See Step 6.
  • Obtain professional liability insurance. Most do so by joining PAGE or GAE. You must provide proof of liability insurance in Step 7.
  • Gather the personal professional information required in the Preliminary Contract (see Step 7).  Work history, PSC credentials, experience with diverse students are among the info items needed then. 
  • Email MAF and request that your personal discussion board be set up.

Decide basic logistical parameters: where (which system), when you will do internship hours, and when you will register for EDIT 7460.
When: May of Year 1 (or before, if you're on a fast track).  How: submit this form. When you're finished, wait for MAF's instructions before proceeding. kalamazoo

Determine if system approval is required. kalSGL
If you're interested in Clarke, Gwinnett, Elbert, Fayette, Forsyth, or Oconee, review this document (request access by clicking on it).
For all other systems, we assume that principals' permission is adequate until we hear differently.Book on Redkawaiichihuahua
If your system is on the list above, follow those instructions.  If it's not, tentatively approach mentor MS. Find out if he or she is willing and able to sponsor your internship.

Placement Approval: Once you think you know the name of your proposed mentor media specialist, school, and system, fill out the Placement Approval Form.  Wait for placement approval before proceeding to Step 7 (you can do Step 6 if you think it will be needed).

Submit 2 weeks prior to 1st day of your registered Internship semester.

If necessary, initiate Criminal Background Check process through UGA's system.

  1. Access the Preliminary Contract Template, read the instructions, and begin by copying and renaming the document (as instructed).
  2. Fill in all parts (except for signatures).
  3. Share with maryannfitz@gmail.com when you're finished, sending the auto-email included in this procedure.
  4. Wait for feedback, approval, and further instructions.
Typical: fall of Year 2
Latest possible:
Submit Prelim Contract 2 weeks prior to end of drop/add in your registered Internship semester.

Once Preliminary Contract is approved, gather all signatures.

Email each person whose signature is required, attaching a copy of the contract. Ask them to review, and if approved, email MAF, saying "approved" in the message, and with the contract attached.  MAF will post a "green light/get started" message on your Board when all approvals have been recieved - do not being logging hours until you see this message.  K

Once you have received the "green light" message, begin intern hours.
  • Begin journal immediately - share w/ MAF.  Use a private GoogleDoc unless there's a compelling reason not to.J-Face
  • Using the template from the  Internship Documentation Template, log your time as you go.  Keep a running total of time within your journal as well.
  • You may work only up to 20 hours under the auspices of this Preliminary Contract. During these 20 hours, observe, perform clerical and shelving duties as directed, and negotiate your Final Contract (Step 10).

Negotiate  Final Contract
  • Plan how you will document your teaching (if required) and make arrangements if necessary.

Fill in all parts of the Final Contract, except for signatures.

Wait for approval; revise as requested.

Latest possible:
Submit by 2 weeks prior to midterm of registered Internship semester.

Once Final Contract is approved, gather all signatures electronically:
  • Convert approved contract to a Word document.
  • Send as attachment to each signer, asking for review and approval.
  • If approved, signer emails mfitzger@uga.edu with the contract attached.

When Final Contract has been rec'd and logged in, you may begin intern hours or continue at the 21st hour.  Work through the Contract, completing each element.  Update your Googledoc log approximately every 10 hours of intern work.  If you need to make a significant change in the contract, post a Proposed Amendment to your Discussion Board. m Fall-Spring Y2

Register for EDIT 7460 in the semester you will complete it.  middle of Fall, Y2 for Spring Y2 semester

Complete your hours, journaling as you go along. Keep a running hour total in your journal.  Begin Step 16 during the last 10 hours or so of your primary site work.  Spring Y2

Mentor Evaluation steps (as you wrap up your hours):
  1. Download the  Mentor Evaluation form (.doc).
  2. Send the blank form directly to your mentor, or provide the file in some other way (but not paper).
  3. Request that your mentor fill out the form, and submit it by emailing it as an attachment directly to me (mfitzger at uga dot edu).
  4. Watch here & on your board for receipt; you may need to send reminders.
