Decide basic logistical parameters: where (which system), when you will do internship hours, and when you will register for EDIT 7460. MAF will ask for this info in May, for the next years' batch of interns.  However, you may file the form when you're ready.

Explore preliminary logistics: determine if system approval is required; tentatively approach mentor MS

First Approval: Once you think you know the name of your proposed mentor media specialist, school, and system, post this information on your personal WebCT discussion board and wait for First Approval of mentor and site; also state your own employer. (Template for this request)

Submit 2 weeks prior to 1st day of your registered Internship semester.

When approved, initiate Criminal Background Check process through UGA's system.  Please tell me when you've done this, because I must report to the COE.

Fill in all parts (except for signatures) of the Preliminary Contract and submit to MAF for Second Approval via your personal WebCT discussion board.  Wait for approval. (We will check on CBC prior to this approval.)
Typical: fall of Year 2
Latest possible:
Submit Prelim Contract 2 weeks prior to end of drop/add in your registered Internship semester.

Once Preliminary Contract is approved, gather all signatures.
  • Paper option: Make a copy for your records. Send original to MAF (Macon address preferred).
  • Electronic option: copy approval emails and paste into the contract.  These copies must contain complete headers for verification.

Begin intern hours (if desired).
  • Begin log immediately - share w/ MAF.  Use GoogleDocs unless there's a compelling reason not to.
  • Using the template from the Cover Sheet, log your time as you go.

Negotiate Final Contract.  You can intern for up to 20 hours during this phase (doing observation, lightweight duties).
  • Plan how you will document your teaching (if required) and make arrangements if necessary.

Submit Final Contract to Discussion Board - it must be all filled in except for signatures.  Wait for MAF's approval before gathering final signatures (some revisions may be required).

Latest possible:
Submit by 2 weeks prior to midterm of registered Internship semester.

Once Final Contract is approved, gather all signatures electronically: ask each signer to send an email saying "approved" to MAF w/ the document attached.

When Final Contract has been rec'd and logged in, you may begin intern hours or continue at the 21st hour.  Work through the Contract, completing each element.  Update your Googledoc log approximately every 10 hours of intern work.  (If you need to make a significant change in the contract, post a Proposed Amendment to your Discussion Board.)

Register for EDIT 7460 in the semester you will complete it. middle of Fall, Y2 for Spring Y2 semester

Work your hours.  Journal to a reasonable extent as you go along.

Mentor Evaluation steps (as you wrap up your hours):
  1. Download the  Mentor Evaluation form (.doc).
  2. Send the blank form directly to your mentor, or provide the file in some other way (but not paper).
  3. Request that your mentor fill out the form, and submit it by emailing it as an attachment directly to me (mfitzger at uga dot edu).
  4. Watch the Gradebook for receipt; you may need to send reminders.

Create Documentation, according to the Rubric and Cover Sheet. Submit via Dropbox (no paper, if possible).

Optional:  I like to send a handwritten thank-you card to mentors.  I will do this if you provide a mailing address for him/her - post it on your discussion board.
