Catch-up Week
The topic I had
planned for this week, "Applying What is Known to Problems," now seems
redundant in light of your projects and our prior discussions. I
feel
that there is very little to add about this given all that we have
done. Certainly, if you have questions along this line, they will be
appropriate to raise now or in class on Nov 10.
I know you're working hard on your Instruments
& Materials.
Instead, it makes sense to point you to some readings for the topic of
Analysis. That, in addition to your PPP, is enough for you to work on
this week. These readings are:
- Farmer, 16-17
- Farmer, 28-36 (Yes,
Statistics. Read it and we will deal with the gaps on Nov 10. She deals
with qualitative analysis in this chapter, too - and you need to have
ideas of what to do with both kinds of data.)
- Also, if you have a data
set (interviews, etc.), it would be appropriate to bring those.
- I am a little worried
that Analysis is a TMI topic (Too Much Information) for now, given the
enormity of your design work and data collection. Nevertheless,
some people feel less anxious is they can see the shape of a task they
must complete down the road. We will do a bit of overview on Nov 10 for
this purpose. If this topic needs to return next semester, it will.
Nov 3: Implementation
Audiolesson in WebCT/7340
Oct
27: Ethics
The topic of
Ethics was originally scheduled for this date, but we needed it sooner,
and so covered it on Sept 29. If you
need or want a review, access EDIT
6900's lesson here. (The audiofile of our class discussion is
available within WebCT/7340/Audio).
You have enough to do. The Critique
is due on Oct 27. See other reminders posted on the WebCT/7340/
homepage. No further deliverable required.
A note: I hope you liked Buffy's format for presenting her Applied
Project. (See link from the Agenda). This might help you
visualize what an AP package may look like, although you can't consider
it an exact template.
Oct
20: Follow Up to Design Feedback
You will be
applying many of the lessons learned on Oct
13 (Methodology Day) in the assignments ahead, and your attendance
accomplishes that part of your lesson.
I will evaluate the Designs submitted on 10/13 as quickly as possible,
and post the resulting feedback into the Dropbox area. Please
read this and respond if necessary - I will clearly indicate my
expectations if it is necessary. I will also indicate when I want
you to have finished this task. No deliverable until this
happens.
So, your priorities from 10/14 to 10/27 should be:
1. respond as requested to Design feedback
2. Critique assignment (due 10/27)
3. Instruments and Materials,
as time permits (due 11/10)
Oct 13: Critiquing
Research Lesson
Oct 6
If you attended on 9/29, you've
already done this task.
If you weren't there, see the
Homework under Agenda for that day.
We will attempt to record portions of that meeting; stay tuned.
Catching
Up and/or Individual Conferencing
"due" Sep 29 -
preparation for class, no deliverable
This is a week to take stock
and think about the big picture. I've identified Shoulds, Coulds,
and a preview.
Shoulds:
- Take the feedback given previously and really work
hard on your Design. This is one of the most critical phases of
your AP.
- Read the IRB
Guidelines that apply to this class.
- Be prepared to give a 2-minute Project Update to the
class on 9/29. It helps and motivates us all to hear about the
progress of others.
Coulds:
- Individual conferencing in a format of your choosing is your
option - we can Skype, talk on the phone, or email. If you have
questions to run by me or ideas you want to float, this is a good time
to do that. There may also be time on 9/29 for this.
- Think ahead toward the pieces (surveys, interviews, etc.) that
you might be developing for your AP.
- Not to early to be thinking about the Critique that's due on
10/27.
- Review the AP Guidelines posted on the WebCT 7340 homepage.
Coming Up:
For Sep 29 I've identified topics
that seem to be critical for work underway. Although Ethics was
scheduled for later, it's clear to me that we need to go ahead and
address it now during the Design phase. That's why it would be very
helpful for you to read UGA's Class IRB Guidelines. We'll be
talking about Research Ethics in general, and also how it applies to
our special class data collection.
You're also welcome to attend the
Critique session before lunch.
We enter a heavy production phase from mid-October through
mid-November. This is a good time to clear the decks and work
ahead.
SLM Research Star Follow-Up
Due Sep 22
You have had the
opportunity to learn about many different
topics of research from our SLM research stars. Along with those
topics, you might have noticed a number of different research methods.
Task:
- Select one of the research studies that
used a research
design methodology that you are considering using for your research.
- Ientify the
following components in the study: (It's okay to copy and paste
directly from the journal text to your table.)
- research
purpose
-
methodology (overall)
- data
collection methods/techniques
-
participants
and how they were selected
- data
analysis methods
- Write a paragraph
(or 10 bullet points or less) outlining how you might
apply what you have learned about this type of research design to your
own
research study. If after reading the study, you do not think it applies
to your
study, explain your rationale for rejecting that design.
- Be sure to give the citation for the article.
- Post on the WebCT Discussion Board called "SLM Star
Follow-Up." No attachments if you can help it!
- Allow time later to browse through the responses of others.
- We hope you can see the value of doing this while planning the
Design of your AP, and having access to the analyses of your peers.

Updating MAF: due Aug 25
1. Select and
register your SLM Research
Star with Beth B. (beth@alumni.mercer.edu)
2. Post a description of your progress so far in WebCT/Discussion: go
to WebCT/7340/Discussion thread called Updating MAF. Full instructions
are there.
Optional:
If you'd like to peek at what EDIT 6900 is up to, on the topic "What is
Research?," see here.
Response Loop
due Sep 1
1. First, you updated me.
2. Next I responded to you.
3. Now - you respond to my response.
I
will read your responses to Aug
25 and 'push back' at you through a Private Reply on the Discussion
Board. I will probably have follow-up questions for you in this
'push back', and let's get this loop completed by Sep 1.
That means I must have completed my
responses to you by mid-week -
approximately 8/29. (Check - done!)
