----- Old Planners -----

Cycle 1: Aug 29 - Sep 19
I am fixing the Gordon problem; other than that, this planner is set for the cycle.
Tasks to complete by this date, in order (as much as possible):

Topic
Required
Supplemental
Course Overview
[] Read the Syllabus; and explore the website and ELC to figure out where things are.
[] Organize your calendar around all the dates provided, especially the meeting dates and the due dates.

Course Logistics
[✓] Form your team as early as possible.
[] Subscribe to the C8 Blog using your favorite feed reader.
[] Submit your Profile in the dropbox by Sep 6.
[] Attend class on Sept 19, 9a-11a; Internship 11-12; Lunch 12-12:30
[] Open a Skype account and add me to your contact list (my ID is maryannfitzgerald).  You can IM me or "call  me" (for free) anytime I'm logged onto Skype.
[] Consider opening a Delicious account. And/or, consider subscribing to the RSS feed for the 6900 bundle.
Assignments
[] Conduct SLMS Interview.
[] Complete SLMS Interview assignment by Sep 13. Submit to ELC dropbox; post brief notes on discussion board.
[] Claim your Star as soon as possible; submit name to the Exhibition Manager.
[] Plan an intense groupwork session as you negotiate your team membership and start discussing the RQ assignment.
[] Brainstorm with your group about good Problem Project topics. The Interview (your own combined with reading notes posted by classmates) is designed to provide lots of ideas.
[]If you're concerned about how to write a Researchable Question, you can get ahead by working on these "lessons":
What is Research?
[] Read all of Farmer.
[] For the topic "What is Research," read:  []Scholastic and []Todd.
[] Identify an SLM blogger who watches and applies new ideas and research; follow for the semester; incorporate ideas as appropriate.
Types of Research
[] Read Gordon.
[] Listen: to Gordon commentary related to types of research. Use this document, and the audiofile (instructions are in the document). The audio is about 12 minutes. (Files were missing, but are now available in ELC/6900/Readings.)

Internship (SLM only)
[] If you plan to do an internship this academic year, and have not done so, explore the Internship site.

Cycle 2: Sep 19-Oct 10  3 weeks
Status: finalized
Topics Required Supplemental
Establishing a theoretical frame around a problem and drafting a researchable question [] Framing a research problem (and drafting an RQ): review as needed.
[] Researchable Questions: review as needed

Exploring literature
[] Readings for Exploring Literature: this is a stretch, but move through this if you possibly can.
  • Leedy & Ormrod Ch4 (ELC/Readings:"Lit Reviews:L+O Ch4")
  • Farmer 6-8
  • Farmer 37-38
  • Journal listing (ELC)
[] Exploring literature audiolesson
[] Fitzgerald's "manual" for writing Lit Reviews (aka "Muddy Lessons")

[]Explore some of the search links I've collected in Delicious
Advisement and Graduation
[] Review Graduation Checklist
[] Plan remainder of your graduate program
[] Start drafting your POS.  I will ask all students to bring a printed copy of this for review near the end of the semester.

Assignments

[] Decide which APA you will follow (5th or 6th) and review accordingly; several resources provided in ELC Resources.
[] Read through the SLMS Interviews submitted on the ELC Discussion Board.
[] Send me your team-member's names. I will set up your ELC team discussion board as they come in.
[] With your team, negotiate your topic choice.
[] RQs due 9/27
[] Send your PPP URL to kristiem@bellsouth.net w/ 6900 in the subject line (one per team; make sure to list team members for her).
[] Start Research Notebook.
[] PPP Drafts are due on 10/11, and we'll uphold this deadline if possible.  Look over the assignment. While creating your RQ and waiting for feedback, do some literature exploration, harvesting potentially useful items as you go; always keep a running search record and bibliography.  If you do this, asseming your PPP Draft will not be difficult.

[]It's a good idea to run your PPP idea by me prior to constructing your RQ.
[]If you have any "down time," there's nothing keeping you from working on the Star Exhibit and the Critique.

Cycle 3: Oct 10-Oct 24  2 weeks
Final
Topics Required Supplemental
Synthesizing Literature

[] As time permits (now or later, definitely one of the two) revisit the Synthesizing Literature topic and listen to the audio (in ELC 6900 Audio).  This "makes up" for the fact that we didn't get finished with it in class.
Housekeeping
[]  Complete Midterm Survey online by 10/24.
PPP

[]I plan to provide feedback on your PPP Drafts by around 10/18. There may be specific follow-up tasks for your group to take care of. In any case, plan to debrief the feedback within your team.
Assignments

[] PPP Draft due 10/11
[] If you don't have access to WebCT 7460, let me know. I will put you in temporarily.
[] Exhibition preparations:
  • Submit your link to jenngill@uga.edu by 10/21
  • Finish your exhibit by 10/24
  • Prepare to use Wimba Classroom - run the wizard, etc. Tour the interface if it's new for you.
[] Submit Exhibition documentation into the ELC 6900 Dropbox by Sunday night (10/25).

Cycle 4: Oct 24-Nov 14  (3 weeks)
Status: finalized
Topics Required Supplemental
Synthesizing Literature
[] If you didn't get this done last cycle, revisit the Synthesizing Literature topic and listen to the audio (in ELC 6900 Audio).  This "makes up" for the fact that we didn't get finished with it in class.
Criticism
Ethics of research
Explore one of these three problematical examples:
Then, review this lesson.  (We won't have time to cover this in class.)

Research methods and techniques
  • Farmer 3-8
  • Farmer 14-16
Making a difference
  • research-why
  • Prove-It (ELC/Readings)
  • Planning & Evaluating the SLMP (Empowering Learners, p. 30-31; MAF's audio in ELC Readings). This section is in the new standards (2009) that take the place of Information Power. Although you may not yet have this book, this section is highly relevant to this class - listening to the audio will give you the gist of it.

Assignments

[] PPP: Take care of all feedback from the PPP Draft. In any case, plan to debrief the feedback within your team.
[] Critique due 11/15 (submit crit link to cdiskin at uga dot edu)
  • Review as needed: Critiquing research studies
  • Statistics: if your crit article is loaded with statistics, do not fear!  Read Farmer 28-36 as a quick overview of stats.
  • In 2007, I started an FAQ for the Critique Assignment.  Email your questions about this task and I will answer publically or privately, as appropriate.
  • Send your critique link to cdiskin at uga dot edu.

Graduation
graduation cap
[] POS: if you have not done this yet, bring a paper print-out of your POS. Consider it a first draft.  I want an update on everybody's status on this, whether I'm the advisor or not.   Also, bring a stamp.  If Dr. Clinton is your advisor and this is all taken care of, just provide an update for me.
