Bibliography Assignment
Social Studies, Grade 5:
SS5H8 The student will describe the importance of key people, events and developments
between 1950-1975.
a. discuss the importance of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War
b. explain the key events and people of the Civil Rights movement including the Brown v.
Board of Education 1954, Montgomery Bus Boycott, the March on Washington,
Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act and civil rights activities of Thurgood
Marshall, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King, Jr.
c. describe the impact on American society of the assassinations of President John F.
Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

What concepts are in this standard? I've highlighted some.  For this assignment, it would be fine to break this large standard down and choose one strand.
Subject term: March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, Washington, D.C., 1963--Juvenile literature.
Subject term: Civil rights demonstrations--Washington (D.C.)--History--20th century--Juvenile literature.
Subject term: African Americans--Civil rights--Juvenile literature.
Subject term: March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, Washington, D.C., 1963.
Subject term: Civil rights demonstrations.
Subject term: African Americans--Civil rights.

Amazon; PINES; GIL; Librarians' Index to the Internet; open web; Gainesville City; Peachstar...  This is a good time to develop a list of five or so Favorite Places -- dependable indexes of resources suitable for your school.  Keep the list small and know these sites well.
Keep your class and teacher in mind -- what will they find useful and how will they use it? Evaluate and eliminate according to selection criteria and suitability.

Check the assignment again for the descriptive information you need as you go along. This example is just a starter, not a comprehensive project.

GLC is kinda scattered. Try: home/Search/enter terms/don't be fooled by "blank" look of results

MARC Records for Online Resources

Two ways to go (MAF's opinion):
  1. Following the principle that patrons should have to search as few "filing cabinets" as possible, it makes sense to catalog web sites within your OPAC. I think you should formulate criteria for what kinds of web sites should be included.  I would also recommend using very brief records, concentrating on subject headings.  Web sites disappear quickly, so weigh the effort this will take. Also, web sites should be directly clickable through your OPAC, or there's not much point.  There are many examples of MARC records for web sites out there; you can use all the normal "cheats" that we've learned about.
  2. As an alternative, consider the webliography route.  This would be easier for YOU, but weigh the benefits to patrons. If you have an online curriculum map that teachers really use, this would be a good way to go.  You could organize pages for teachers by curriculum, and different pages for students.  I see a lot of effort spent in this direction.
Samples downloaded from LOC

Online MARC Manual from OCLC: http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/

A few special MARC tags that you can consider:
Locating and Acquiring MARC from LOC  [trying LOC Help File]

Sunlink: can't download but CAN copy! Great for videos and other non-print materials; has some website records. Created by your SLMS peers in Florida.

Z39.50: "Z39.50 is a national and international (ISO 23950) standard defining a protocol for computer-to-computer information retrieval. Z39.50 makes it possible for a user in one system to search and retrieve information from other computer systems (that have also implemented Z39.50) without knowing the search syntax that is used by those other systems. Z39.50 was originally approved by the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) in 1988." from http://www.loc.gov/z3950/gateway.html#about

Review of "Cheats":  local catalog for similar records and patterns; public library OPAC; vendor online catalogs; Amazon; GIL; System union catalog; Sunlink; LOC; human resources; CIP; Gwinnett Public

Discussion placeholder: school libaries with no books. I've heard of two cases in Georgia where a new library is proposed with e-books/online resources only.
