Purpose
This assignment provides an early feedback opportunity for one of the two large products required in this course.  The rationale for this assignment and full explanation for each of the three components are given in the Final Project (Order) description. Your first step in completing this Draft should be to read the Order description thoroughly.

In this exercise, you will create some early elements needed for your Order.  Full credit is given for complete assignments, along with qualitative formative feedback.  We expect you to apply this feedback in your completed Order.

We recommend that you draw upon all relevant past projects in completing this assignment.

Overview
This preliminary task requires you to submit a complete first draft of the first component (Annual Selection Target and Rationale), a template for your order list, and outlines for several other components. The highlighted text below indicates the expectations for this Draft assignment.

Components

    1. Annual Selection Target and Rationale: choose one that has the potential of costing at least $2500. (It is possible to use more than one Target for this project, but it will be more difficult if you do.) In the Rationale, describe the reason for building up this area of the collection. Address your Rationale to your learning community, justifying your proposed purchases. It is essential that your Rationale include connections to the Media Center Philosophy, the School Mission (or Goals), the MC's Program Plan (PDEP), and student achievement (or learning).   Key themes in this rationale might include access to information, curriculum support, literacy, diversity, and intellectual freedom.  Draft piece: a complete first draft.
    2. Order list: Using the selection policies, selection tools, and procedures described in this class, compile a consideration file of potential resources. Make sure to use quality criteria appropriate to the topic and formats chosen. Provide an active link to the appropriate policies, or otherwise make it clear which criteria you are using. Submit vendor-ready lists of materials in the current order. Include plenty of information about each item for adequate description: title, author, vendor, publication date, approximate price, classification, ISBN or other ordering number, and the specific reason(s) for buying each item. (A more detailed list of fields is provided here.)   Make sure to provide for diversity of learners in some way - and be explicit about this purpose.  There should be some variety among formats. Draft piece: a template for this list along with one sample item.
    3. Use of money: How do you expect to spend the full amount budgeted for this Selection Target? Outline expenditures here. You need not provide full item descriptions at this stage, but how do you predict that the money will be distributed across items?  Will you use multiple vendors?  Given the expectations of the Order assignment, what kinds of formats will you purchase? It is ok if your final Order departs from this initial plan. Draft piece: a table that itemizes types of materials predicted for purchase, with possible dollar amounts and vendors.
    4. Presentation: Generate a presentation for your Media Committee in a suitable format (for example, a written "speech," detailed agenda, or a slide presentation). Visualize the scenario of the meeting in which you formally present your order to obtain the approval of the Committee for the purchases. In your talk, you should clearly delineate your reasons for your selections, and reference the MC Philosophy. Specify how quality criteria were applied in the selection process (which means you must list the criteria or link to your Selection Policy), and how you guarded against self-censorship. Prepare your arguments as if you expect a great deal of opposition and skepticism. Draft piece: an outline of slide titles or talking points.
    5. Processing checklist: As you work, compose a checklist of all the steps  followed throughout this project - so that you can remember what you did when the time comes for you to do this again. Draft piece: checklist of steps completed to this point.
