Purpose
To provide a realistic, collaborative opportunity to apply selection skills; to provide an opportunity to explore instructional materials in a specific subject area.  The following AASL competencies are expected: 1.3; 4.1; 4.2.

Overview
Choose an Annual Selection Target from your Selection Policy. For example, your PD&EP for this year may call for collection development in a particular area, like science, or to improve the fiction section, or to begin a DVD collection.  Assume that the Media Committee at your school has chosen this curricular area or collection portion for intensive development in the coming fiscal year. Choose an area that has the potential to demonstrate all the competencies reflected in this assignment.  Develop a consideration file of resources to support this developmental area.

Your job is to construct an order for these materials, and to present and defend your choices before the Media Committee. $2,500 of the budget has been earmarked for this purpose.  (If you have access to a similar but more authentic situation, we can work with it; please discuss with me.)

Procedure and Components

    1. Annual Selection Target and Rationale: choose one that has the potential of costing at least $2500. (It is possible to use more than one Target for this project, but it will be more difficult if you do.) In the Rationale, describe the reason for building up this area of the collection. Address your Rationale to your learning community, justifying your proposed purchases. It is essential that your Rationale include connections to the Media Center Philosophy, the School Mission (or Goals), the MC's Program Plan (PDEP), and student achievement (or learning).   Key themes in this rationale might include access to information, curriculum support, literacy, diversity, and intellectual freedom.
    2. Order list: Using the selection policies, selection tools, and procedures described in this class, compile a consideration file of potential resources. Make sure to use quality criteria appropriate to the topic and formats chosen. Provide an active link to the appropriate policies, or otherwise make it clear which criteria you are using. Submit vendor-ready lists of materials in the current order. Include plenty of information about each item for adequate description: title, author, vendor, publication date, approximate price, classification, ISBN or other ordering number, and the specific reason(s) for buying each item. (A more detailed list of fields is provided here.) Although you will be spending $2500, you must use some procedure to insure against back order delays.  Make sure to provide for diversity of learners in some way - and be explicit about this purpose.  There should be some variety among formats.
    3. Presentation: Generate a presentation for your Media Committee in a suitable format (for example, a written "speech," detailed agenda, or a slide presentation). Visualize the scenario of the meeting in which you formally present your order to obtain the approval of the Committee for the purchases. In your talk, you should clearly delineate your reasons for your selections, and reference the MC Philosophy. Specify how quality criteria were applied in the selection process (which means you must list the criteria or link to your Selection Policy), and how you guarded against self-censorship. Prepare your arguments as if you expect a great deal of opposition and skepticism.
    4. Processing checklist: As you work, compose a checklist of all the steps you followed throughout this project - so that you can remember what you did when the time comes for you to do this again.  Include all steps from initial selection target through installing or unpacking the new items.  Address how you will promote the new items.

Acceptable

Contains all necessary components:

[]selection target
[]rationale
[]order list
[]presentation for media committee
[]processing checklist

Value: 5

[]Something missing:

[]Something incomplete:

[]Something does not match its definition

Deduct proportional points for missing items - some "weigh" more than others.
[]Contains all necessary components

[]Components are complete, meaning that every statement listed in the Assignment Description is honored.

[]Components reflect what they are defined to reflect

1.3 Access to Information

Value: 3
[]Little or no evidence of knowledge of issues related to access to information

[]No knowledge of the legal and ethical practices of the profession
[]Facilitates access to information in multiple formats aligned with learner diversity

[]Complies with and communicates the
legal and ethical codes of the profession (no problems found; I'm not looking for a section about this)

[]Proactively avoids self-censorship, thereby supporting intellectual freedom of users
4.1
Managing Information Resources: Selecting, Organizing, Using

Value: 8
[]Little knowledge of accepted library policies, procedures and practices for selecting, organizing, and using information []Selects, analyzes, and evaluates resources using professional selection tools

[]Selects, analyzes, and evaluates  resources using evaluation criteria; articulates how criteria were applied

[]student learning or achievement

[]Organizes the LM facility and its collections (print, nonprint, and electronic) according to standard accepted practice: procedures seem complete, proper, and efficient. Here, I allow room for growth.  I'm looking for a good headstart on your procedure list, with no glaring problems.

4.2
Managing Program Resources: Human, Financial, Physical

Value: 5

Possible misconception in this assignment: emphasis on complete spending of allotment (to avoid back-ordering),  but not enough emphasis on staying within budgeted amount overall.  You need to spend every penny every year, but there's a tension between that and good stewardship. Try to never be in the situation of "getting rid" of money quickly, through careful planning.

[]Little knowledge of effective management policies, procedures and principles

[]Little knowledge of relationship of facility to program needs

[]Explicit management problem detected: __________________
Applies accepted management principles and practices that relate to personnel and financial issues:
[]Selection responsibility carried out by qualified personnel
[]Collaboration with Media Committee evident
[]Money budgeted and managed properly

[]Money was spent, with no danger of back orders. Math is correct; total provided.  Order provides adequate and accurate information for vendor's use.

[]New materials are promoted to the learning community.
Mechanics: presentation, grammar, spelling, quality of writing; formatting; organization; referencing

Value: 2
[]Errors frequently interrupt evaluator's ability to absorb content
