Circulation and Promotion "The best school media collection is of little use unless the materials in the collection are promoted and circulated to students and teachers" (Bishop, 2007, p129). Circulation Circulation policies
should be clearly stated and made available. Points to consider: What other collection items each of these patron types may borrow, e.g. reference books, magazines, videos, equipment. Ethical use of items borrowed, e.g. video camera. How long something can be checked out. How you will keep up with parent or community member circulation. How much you will charge
for lost or damaged items. Does the same apply to teachers? If students with lost books will be allowed to checkout additional books. (What if they can't pay?) Whether you should charge overdue fines. Whether you will keep patron barcodes for checkout or require them to bring them when they come. "To encourage the use of library materials, media specialists should develop workable circulation policies and procedures that are positive, rather than punitive" (Bishop, 2007, p139). It is not enough to have
an inviting facility.
Promotion of existing collection and new materials Media Center Web page Book reviews in school newspaper Article about new books in school newspaper or video about new books for news broadcast Book Talks and Book Talks featuring new books Read the books (new and old) so you can provide Reader's Advisory Encourage students to tell others about books they loved Place new books in special section for awhile Display new books strategically where they can be easily seen Shelf tags to promote recommendations or new items Teacher preview or email list of new books to teachers Author visits Reading motivation programs Shelve books with front cover facing out when possible Other suggestions?
