Circulation and Promotion

"The best school media collection is of little use unless the materials in the collection are promoted and circulated to students and teachers" (Bishop, 2007, p129).

Circulation

Circulation policies should be clearly stated and made available.
They should be created with input from the Media Committee and may vary depending on your school population, collection size, curriculum needs, and budget.

Points to consider:
How many books students, teachers, staff, parents, and possibly community members may check out.

What other collection items each of these patron types may borrow, e.g. reference books, magazines, videos, equipment.

Ethical use of items borrowed, e.g. video camera.

How long something can be checked out.

How you will keep up with parent or community member circulation.

How much you will charge for lost or damaged items. Does the same apply to teachers?
[original cost, percentage of cost based on age and condition, replacement cost]

If students with lost books will be allowed to checkout additional books. (What if they can't pay?)

Whether you should charge overdue fines.

Whether you will keep patron barcodes for checkout or require them to bring them when they come.

"To encourage the use of library materials, media specialists should develop workable circulation policies and procedures that are positive, rather than punitive" (Bishop, 2007, p139).

It is not enough to have an inviting facility.
The media specialist, media parapro, and media volunteers need to also be inviting!
