Collection Evaluation:
Chicken or Egg? Ongoing!
This topic branches into other areas. From our course
Framework:
A. Collection
Evaluation (we start and end with this because it's ongoing and
cyclical)
- Knowledge of the Collection
- Knowledge of Learning
Community
- Needs Assessment
- Actions that result
Collection
Evaluation: Where are the weaknesses
in the collection?
Comparing what you have to what you need
- First, you must have as much familiarity with the collection as
possible.
- Why? Similar situation: How
many times have you gone to the store to purchase a specific item, and
then a week later you find a duplicate in a closet? Not a fatal
mistake, but a waste of resources. That's one reason why.
- Tools, methods for evaluating the
collection (these may look
familiar)
- Curriculum mapping compared to Collection mapping
(another source: Loertscher, 1996)
- Content standards should be represented
- Use your automation system to generate profiles of different
areas
- Many vendors will profile your collection –
proceed with caution (built-in commercial bias to any vendor-based
service)
- Lists and awards
- Text supplementary materials lists
- Circulation stats
- Patron opinions and suggestions, and the many methods of
tapping them
- Unfilled request log
- Weed replacements
- Many of these evaluation methods are also selection tools, (handy)
- Actions:
- Weeding
of things that no longer measure up
- Listing needed items (in the Consideration File)
- Prioritizing - because you can
never buy everything you need
- Acquiring
materials to fill gaps
- Identifying items that need
maintenance and making repairs
