- Examples
- For beginners, we highly recommend
GoogleSites. Edublogs, Wordpress, other free sites would work as well.
- Job Aid: Assignment Page Template
(this provides a basic layout)
Where
is everything?
You will have it all if you:
- Do the things listed on the Planner
(calendar is there, too).
SLM/Grad school dates are listed on the calendar.
- Watch the Cohort9 Blog
for class-specific news and topics - it's
best to subscribe. [Instructions]
- Monitor your email for SLM-L (rare), ELC emails, direct
messages from professors or classmates. You can also have the blog come
to your
email. Make sure to watch your Junk folder and teach everyone to use
your primary email address.
- Watch for ELC notifications. I'll use its email only in
desperation. But watch in case of Discussion postings, grade
postings, etc.
- Know your way around the 6300 website and ELC. I'll use ELC
for private things.
- Delicious
and Netvibes
provide alternative organizations of this
course.

Reading
& Literacy
Besides starting the RLP Draft, we didn't cover too much territory
here. To keep us on schedule, follow the link and listen to the audio.
Group
Work
Goals for today: Try to formulate initial groups for the R&L Draft
assignment.
This seems early, but it is really best to do this in person and as
soon as
possible -- remembering that you can change groupings for later
assignments.
Choose format and audience and establish group working procedures.

Carmen Deedy (MAF reads)
Bonus tie-in: to get a
flavor for Carmen's storytelling, see her TED
Talk "Spinning a Story of Mama"
(I love TED Talks!) (TED:
Technology,
Entertainment, Design)
My favorite Deedy book is actually Agatha's
Feather Bed.
Homework Hints, Cycle 1
Be careful not to let the weeks go by in a rush - it would be
easy to
think you have a long time to get everything done, but remember this is
two or three
week's worth of homework. Therefore, it's not a good idea
to wait
until the night before!
GALILEO hints:
- finding
the password
- using persistent links
- sometimes they don't persist,
but they will usually take you at least part of the way
- have the citation on hand to help you navigate
- UGA Libraries login procedure has been reformed lately
Readings, readings, everywhere! Yes, I will sometimes flood you
with citations. I want you to have plenty of resources.
However, you are responsible for the ones listed in the Planner.
The others you see (like on the green Content page) are there for
further reference.
Good SLMS blogs:
Or
search for these names: Doug Johnson - Blue Skunk; Alice Yucht - Alice
in Infoland; Rob Darrow -
California Dreamin'; Diane Chen: Deep Thinking; Frances Harris:
Gargoyles Loose in the Library; Chris Harris: Infomancy; Mary J.
Johnson: The Primary Source Librarian; Jacquie Henry: Wanderings.

9:00
- Overview of the day
- Business
- Logic of collaborative planning, but not the how-to
- Logic connecting CP to flex scheduling
- Flavors of flex scheduling
RLPs:
brief show-and-tell of
ideas
Exhibition Logistics
- Submit your direct link by 9/30 to Cristina
- Comment options: Discussion Board as backup; tell us in
your Exhibit where to comment
- Class "meetings" at 9am, again later; will provide more
detailed schedule as I work up the agenda
- Exhibits - visit during the day; leave comments on 5-10;
nominate
liberally for awards (Funniest; Geekiest; Best use of graphics; etc.,
etc. - not competitive) - do this by emailing or Skye/IMing me
- Backup Plan: A. Chat within Wimba Voice Direct - this will
probably work even if voice doesn't. Plan B: time shift content, but we
can't reschedule.
- Tour of Wimba Classroom (probably not necessary)
- You will need a headset microphone (cheap at BestBuy,
will have
multiple uses in the longrun)
- Your task: login ahead of time, run the setup wizard
- In the classroom:
- I will play music 15 min. ahead of time as you login.
- Click the Hand icon to speak, or to wait for your
turn.
- Click the X icon to release the microphone.
- Watch the running chat and comment as you like.
- I will ask yes/no questions; indicate your answer.
- Any words of advice about Wimba from experienced
folks?
- Backup plans
- If a major tool goes down, I'll look for a workaround.
- If your 2.0
tool of choice goes down, we can make it up later.
- If the Internet is down for me, I'll use the phone tree
to pass along news. There can be no actual rescheduling. If
I were you, I'd still use the time to visit exhibits as much as
possible.

Exhibition:

due
soon: Reading and
Literacy Project
Preparation
- Login to Wimba ahead of time (from ELC 6300). Run the
browser check, and note the dial-in numbers in case of trouble. (One
form of trouble could easily be that your connection goes down; phone
provides a workaround.)
Backup Plan
- Keep trying, if you can't get on or get in. Call a
classmate. Watch SLM-L in case I send an urgent message.
- Dial the Wimba number listed (ELC 6300 Wimba - it's on one
of the first screens you see. Note the PIN as well.)
- Don't panic. We'll archive, in case somebody
misses.
- If the problem is on my end (like if my cable or power goes
out,
or ELC goes down, etc.), carry on with your visits through the
Exhibition. I'll communicate with you through SLM-L or the blog
as soon as I can.
9:00 "Meet" in ELC
- Go to ELC 6300 and click on the Wimba icon
.
- I'll have my microphone stuck in the "on" position and play
music
about 15min before class.
- We archived this session - the file is available (I think)
if you go to ELC-6300-Wimba - on the first screen.
- Tech stuff
- Use the chat window to "talk" to everyone, or a single
person
- Have this page open in another window
- During "class," if you have a question, click the hand to
request to "speak," or, type it into the chat window. I'll be
happy to respond.
- Business for the Exhibition
- Business for other things
- Why we need to spend a day talking about avenues of Keeping Current
All
day: visit Exhibits
- Visit all in any order you please
- Comment on as many as you like, but aim for a minimum of 5
(the more the better, though)
- Make constructive compliments and/or suggestions
- Try not to repeat previous comments
- Nominate at least one Exhibit for a Wacky Award. The more
the better here, too.
1:00
We archived this session, too - the file is available (I
think) if you go to ELC-6300-Wimba - on the first screen.
