Consider what you already know about research and what you know you need to know.  Send me an email with three headings:

• About me: briefly describe your professional background and your professional goals (1 paragraph)
• What I already know about research (including things I know how to do): it's likely that you know more than you might expect at first.  I prefer that this be a list of bullet points.
• What I need to find out about research, and what I'm expecting to learn in this class. Again, I prefer a list of bullet points here.

Send this assignment as an email to me at mfitzger@coe.uga.edu.  Please don't make it an attachment - I dislike spending a lot of time opening and virus-scanning attachments.  Here's what you can do:
 

• Include your responses in the body of the email OR
• Attach as a .txt attachment.

Since I am a visual learner myself, I would love it if you could attach a digital photo or provide a URL to a phot of yourself.  Optional!

You will probably figure out that this homework assignment will serve as a Needs Assessment activity for the class.

Homework Assignment 3
Find some sample problems of library practice that might lead to research projects.  Talk to a librarian you know, think about your own experience, and/or browse through a professional journal.  What kinds of problems do librarians face in the professional context you are interested in?

For example, middle school boys are often reluctant readers of fiction.  School and youth librarians have great difficulty in enticing many of them to read.  Why is this so?  And what can be done about it?

Problems of professional practice are an excellent place to begin when seeking research topics.  Collect one or two in your head - when you start looking for them, you will find them everywhere.  Simply jot some notes and be ready to share in class - nothing to hand in on this one.
