Admission Requirements

The decision to admit an applicant to a degree program is based on a careful review of the entire application. The goal statement and letters of recommendation are particularly important. Acceptable GPAs and test scores are required as per the following:

GRE* (Verbal + Quantitative)
Grade Point Ave. (Based on a 4.0 scale)
900
(Min. of 450 on each section)
3.3 (Graduate)
2.6 (Undergraduate)

*The analytical section of the GRE is not used in the admissions decision.

All international applicants must also take the TOEFL exam. The minimum score for this exam is 213 for the computer version, or 550 for the printed version.

Prerequisite

A Master's degree (MA/M.Ed) in education, with or without teacher certification is required for admittance to the Specialist program.

General Degree Requirements

The University of Georgia Specialist's degree program consists of a minimum of 30 graduate level semester hours. Students must maintain a 3.0 average in all graduate courses in their programs of study. During the course of their program of study, students are required to complete an applied project in which they apply the skills and knowledge they have developed during the program to the solution of a problem within their professional field. A presentation of the results of the applied project serves as the basis of a comprehensive oral examination which is required by the Graduate School at the end of the student's program.

Additional requirements of the Graduate School are listed in the UGA Graduate School Bulletin .

Estimate of Costs

This is only an estimate, but we wanted to give you a sense of cost. In order to give you this estimate, we guessed as to the cost of books and we guessed that tuition and fees would increase by 10% each year. In addition, since half the program is online, some students will need to purchase a new computer and software. We also recommend that you have a broadband connection in your home. We made estimates on these costs as well. If you already have a new computer on a broadband connection, you will likely not need to make this purchase. Here is the table of estimates:

Semester Tuition & Fees (Estimated) Books
Summer 2005 $1064 $100
Fall 2005 $1170 $100
Spring 2006 $1170 $100
Summer 2006 $1170 $100
Fall 2006 $1290 $100
Computer $1000
Software $500
Broadband $1000
Total EdS $8,864
