Workshop Preparation

In preparation for the workshop, please download and read the Preface to the book Getting Interactive with Authorware: Building Simulations and Games (this is a PDF file; directions on how to get Adobe's free reader software is included at the download site).

Students who have contracted to learn Authorware will need to get a complete copy of Lloyd Rieber's book. IT students at UGA can download this book for free (though you will need to print the book out yourself). You can also purchase copies from Lloyd Rieber at the price charged by Kinko's for duplication and binding (approx. $25). Lloyd will have copies of the book for sale at the workshop. If you would like to print out your own copy of the book, contact Lloyd Rieber at lrieber@coe.uga.edu and he will send you the address of a special private web site from which you can download PDF copies of all the chapters.

When you arrive at the workshop, please download the Rieber Clip Media resource to your computer. This is a collection of clip art, sound, and digital movies produced especially for the book "Getting Interactive with Authorware".

Access to Authorware

Authorware 5 Attain is installed on most of the Windows computers in the 616 lab. If you are interested in buying your own copy, keep in mind that Authorware is an expensive tool. Fortunately, while the single copy corporate price is in the thousands of dollars, there are some deals out there for student version. The best one we have found so far can be found at http://www.JourneyEd.com/ (about $400).

However, if you have your own computer (Windows only), an inexpensive solution to learning this tool is to download the trial version from Macromedia at http://www.macromedia.com/software/authorware/trial/. This version is only good for a limited time (about 30 days), but everything you create with it can then be used in the 616 lab later.

There is more good news. We will be able to check out up to 15 copies of Authorware to studio participants. See Lloyd for details. (During this short summer session, this is not as big a deal because the 30 day limit on the trial version of Authorware should be sufficient for most users. However, if you have been using the trial version and it has already expired, you will have "first dibs" on one of these 15 copies.)
