Design Special Interest Group

Leader: Mike Orey

The purpose of this SIG is two fold.  First, we will read a couple of the required readings for EDIT 6190 and discuss them as a group.  This will make a couple of your readings a bit more structured and tie some of the readings together in a more thematic way.  The second purpose is to explore design for design's sake.  Our final session will be a virtual one wherein we participate in a design activity.

The three sessions will be organized as follows:

1. Mitchell Kapor - A Software Design Manifesto   (Chapter 1 of the Terry Winograd book)

We will use this chapter as the focus of our discussion during our first SIG meeting.  You should read this chapter along with the Profile at the end of the chapter before this session.

2. Donald Norman - Design as Practiced  (Chapter 12 of the Terry Winograd book)

We will use this chapter as the focus of our discussion during our first SIG meeting.  You should read this chapter along with the Profile at the end of the chapter before this session.

3. DESIGN

The final session will be a design activity to be determined during the previous session.  We will each independently redesign something from our everyday world, like the Stop sign.  We will then discuss the process we went through to do this design on WebCT's bulletin board.  We will all do the same re-design and that activity will be decided by the group.
