Some
additional information:
- Assume the role of a media specialist.
- Identify ONE selection target
- Generate an order that will purchase
items to satisfy this target
- Spend the arbitrary amount of
$2500 (chosen mainly because, the more
money, the more work for
you now and this amount gives you plenty of
practice without overwhelming
you).
This assignment requires you to go
far over and above the normal effort required for purchasing.
However, it's my opinion that a lot of effort should go into this
process. Thinking about all of the little points required by this
assignment, and having to demonstrate them, will help you "overlearn"
the process and do a much better job when you have real government
money to spend.
Example:
Let's say you are looking
for books to support your new science series. Your selection target
is to
purchase books in the 500's
that will support your new science curriculum. You should probably
begin
by listing any materials (books
and other types of media)
that are recommended by the textbook series. Next, you would use
selection
tools to identify likely titles that fit
in this area. Of course,
you are limiting your selections to the grade levels of your school in
this example.
To bring in leisure reading and
literature for this objective, I think you will be surprised at how
many fiction materials are recommended in content-rich areas like
science and social studies. Explore current titles for any that
might have related themes. Science fiction, adventure, and
survival-themed books are often highly correlated. Perhaps even
SpiderMan can be tied in.
What
should you be doing early in the semester to get started on this? Here
are some suggestions:
- Establish the selection target
you will be using.
- Start looking for appropriate
matierals, using selection tools. This
is fun! You are shopping
responsibly - with other peoples' money! - Set up a database file OR
a spreadsheet
file to track your titles.
Pay attention (using the
assignment guidelines) to the specific kinds of
information to collect about
each item. This is the beginning of your
consideration file. Consider
using a database - but the learning
curve is steep, so you can
decide if this is something you want to
tackle right now. - Keep track of each step along
the way, because you will also generate
a checklist of steps to help
you out when you do this in the real world.
