Media
specialists
need a system for keeping track of possible materials for future
orders. Otherwise, time is wasted when ordering time comes, and
it can be very difficult
to remember hundreds of potential items. I recommend that media
specialists
construct and maintain a permanent consideration file in a
database.
The purpose of this assignment is to provide an opportunity for setting
up
such a consideration file, using common software, and practicing simple
database
skills. Once you understand how a database works, you may also
gain
some ideas about how to apply databases as an instructional tool for
student
use.
These days, vendors make it very easy to order by providing online
consideration
accounts that are incredibly well-designed. However, you must set up a
consideration
file with each vendor if you use this system. I recommend keeping
a
single database file that you can report from and manipulate in many
different
ways. Someday, I think that library automation systems will
include
the ability to track "wish lists" within them - when that day arrives,
we
can probably abandon the process described in this assignment.
Task
Set up a database file to serve as the beginning of a consideration file. You may use Microsoft Access or any database software at your disposal. Target resources that you can actually use. Any item - including equipment - that might be purchased by a media center can be tracked through a consideration file.
Include a paragraph for my benefit that addresses these issues:
Components
Post your database file on your assignment page. Turn in a hard copy of each report (2) and your paragraph. Print the rubric below and rate yourself before turning in.
